Apex Research Pens vs Traditional Peptide Vials: What’s the Difference?

Evora Pharma

Retaklik Apex pre-filled research pen

Pre-filled Apex research pens and traditional lyophilised peptide vials hold the same kinds of compounds in very different formats. Here’s how they compare on preparation, handling, consistency, storage and cost.

Most research peptides have traditionally been supplied as lyophilised (freeze-dried) powder in glass vials. Evora’s Apex range — Retaklik, Retaklik 2.0, Klikjaro, Wolverineklik and Klik-GHK — is supplied instead as sealed, pre-filled research pens. This post explains how the two formats differ and when each makes sense for a laboratory.

The two formats at a glance

Apex pre-filled pen Traditional vial
Supplied as Ready-prepared solution in a sealed pen Freeze-dried powder in a sealed vial
Preparation None — ready on arrival Reconstitution with a suitable diluent
Handling steps Minimal Several (diluent, transfer, mixing, labelling)
Concentration Fixed and labelled Depends on the volume of diluent added
Storage Refrigerated, 2–8°C Powder: cool and dry. Once reconstituted: refrigerated
Labelling Product, strength and batch on the pen Vial label; mixed solution must be labelled by the lab
Cost per mg Usually higher Usually lower

What is a traditional peptide vial?

Peptides are often freeze-dried for transport because the dry powder is generally stable before it is mixed. In the lab, the powder has to be reconstituted — a measured volume of diluent is added and mixed before the material can be used. The concentration of the final solution depends entirely on how much diluent is added, so it has to be calculated, recorded and labelled by whoever prepares it.

Vials are flexible and usually cheaper per milligram, but every preparation step adds time, equipment and room for error.

What is an Apex research pen?

An Apex pen arrives with the research material already in solution, sealed inside a pre-filled pen with the product name, strength and batch number printed on it. There’s no reconstitution step, no concentration to calculate and no secondary container to label.

Advantages of pre-filled pens

No reconstitution

Removing the mixing step saves bench time and removes the need for diluent, syringes and transfer equipment for preparation.

Consistent, known concentration

Because the pen is filled to specification before dispatch, every pen from a batch carries the same labelled strength. That makes results easier to compare across a project and between team members.

Fewer handling steps

Every transfer between containers is a chance for contamination, spillage or mislabelling. A sealed pen keeps the material in one closed container from arrival to use.

Clearer traceability

Product, strength and batch identification stay on the pen itself, rather than relying on hand-written labels on a mixed vial. That helps with inventory records, audits and repeat orders from the same batch.

Compact storage

Pens take up little fridge space and are easy to organise by product and strength.

When vials may still suit your lab

  • Custom concentrations: if your protocol needs a concentration other than the one supplied, powder gives you that flexibility.
  • Long-term stock: unmixed freeze-dried powder is generally more tolerant of storage before use.
  • Lowest cost per mg: vials are usually cheaper for very large-volume work where preparation time isn’t a concern.

Quality is about the batch, not just the format

Whichever format you choose, the things that matter most are the same: independent purity testing, clear batch identification and honest documentation. Evora publishes independent Janoshik reports for Retaklik batches — 20mg (99.071%), 40mg (99.278%) and 60mg (99.452%) — linked from the homepage lab-reports section.

Storing Apex pens

Keep Apex pens refrigerated at 2–8°C, protected from direct light, and do not freeze unless your batch documentation says otherwise. Put them in the fridge as soon as your parcel arrives, and follow your institution’s procedures for research materials.
